Terms &
Conditions.
Please read before booking. By completing a booking and ticking the agreement box at checkout, you confirm you have read and understood these terms. These terms protect both you and Grain & Silver and set clear expectations for your experience.
01. What Grain & Silver Is
Grain & Silver is a vintage film camera experience provider based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, operated by Joseph Costello as a sole trader.
Sessions involve the guided use of vintage film cameras in outdoor locations across Belfast. All photography is in black and white on analogue film.
Important — please read carefully: Grain & Silver provides a novelty recreational experience, not a photography course, tuition, or professional instruction service. Participation involves guided assistance with camera loading, basic operation, and composition — it does not constitute formal photography education or training of any kind.
02. What Is Included
- Use of a vintage film camera for the duration of the session
- Two rolls of B&W film (35mm or 120mm depending on camera)
- Guided assistance with loading film and operating the camera
- Basic guidance on composition and capturing images
- Hand-processed B&W film development
- HD scan of every frame, delivered via private download link within 5 working days
03. What Is Not Included
- Formal photography tuition or instruction
- Any guarantee of image quality, composition, or exposure
- Colour film or colour processing
- Printed photographs (available separately at additional cost)
- Transport between locations (unless agreed in advance)
- Food, drink, or refreshments (unless agreed as part of a group package)
04. Film & Results Disclaimer
Analogue film photography is inherently unpredictable. By booking a Grain & Silver experience you acknowledge and accept the following:
- Image quality cannot be guaranteed — results depend on light, camera condition, and technique
- Vintage cameras may produce light leaks, grain, soft focus, vignetting, or other film artefacts
- These are properties of analogue film and vintage equipment — they are not faults
- Film can fail for technical reasons beyond our control
- No refund will be issued solely on the basis of unsatisfactory image results
- All results are delivered in black and white — no colour processing is available
05. Session Limits & Film Exhaustion
Each session includes two rolls of film per person. Once film is exhausted the shooting element of the session is complete.
Film exhaustion policy: If all film is used before the allocated session time has elapsed, the guide is not obligated to continue the session beyond assisting with any remaining rolls. Additional rolls are available at £20 per roll (includes processing and scanning), payable on the day. The guide reserves the right to conclude the session if the customer declines additional film and all rolls are exhausted.
Sessions run to a maximum of 90 minutes of shooting time following an initial preparation period of up to one hour for film loading, camera briefing, and equipment handover.
06. Equipment — Cameras
Cameras come from the Grain & Silver collection. Camera requests are welcome but not guaranteed. Cameras are allocated by Grain & Silver and confirmed by email. Vintage cameras vary in condition and character, and part of the experience is that results are unpredictable.
07. Security Deposit Hold
A refundable security hold of £50 per camera (£30 for box cameras) is taken on the morning of the experience, before it starts. A few cameras carry a higher hold, confirmed by email before you pay. It is reserved on your card but not charged.
- The hold is authorised at camera handover. You must present the card used for booking
- If an alternative card is required, arrange it with the guide before the session begins
- The hold is released in full when the cameras are returned in the same condition
- The hold is captured (charged) in the event of loss, theft or damage
- Disputed captures are handled case by case
- Card holds expire after 7 days. Same-day return sessions are not affected
08. Cancellation & Refund Policy
- More than 7 days notice: Full refund of session payment
- 3–7 days notice: 50% refund, or transfer to an alternative date (once only)
- Less than 3 days notice: No refund. Transfer at guide's discretion only
- No-show on the day: No refund
- Adverse weather cancellation by Grain & Silver: Full refund or transfer to alternative date. Decision communicated by 08:00 on the morning of the session via phone and email
- Cancellation by Grain & Silver (illness/emergency): Full refund or transfer with as much notice as possible
Cancellation requests must be made in writing by email to joeycostello46@gmail.com. The cancellation date is the date the email is received.
Technical failure: A full refund will be provided at Grain & Silver's discretion if a camera fails, the film fails, or any part of the service is technically inadequate. No refund is due where all technical delivery is to standard.
09. Group Bookings
- Maximum 6 people per session
- One named group lead is required for all group bookings
- The group lead assumes responsibility for all cameras issued to the group
- The security holds for all cameras in the group are taken on the group lead's card
- All cameras are signed out to the group lead at handover
10. Vintage Photographer Day Hire (£250/day)
Where Joey Costello is hired as photographer rather than guide, the following additional terms apply:
- All photography is in black and white — no colour processing available
- Two rolls of film included — additional rolls at £20 each (includes processing and scanning)
- Session concludes when all film is exhausted unless additional rolls are purchased on the day
- HD scans delivered within 5 working days
- Copyright of all images remains with Joseph Costello unless a separate written agreement is made
- No guarantee of specific shots, angles, or outcomes
- Available weekdays with minimum 7 days notice, subject to confirmation
11. Student & Concession Rates
Concession rates are available to eligible individuals including full-time students, registered unemployed, and those on qualifying benefits.
- Concession rate bookings require a self-declaration at time of booking
- False declarations of eligibility may result in the difference in price being charged
- Grain & Silver reserves the right to verify eligibility and decline concession pricing if eligibility cannot be confirmed
- Concession rates are non-transferable and apply to the named individual only
12. Liability
- Participants take part in all sessions at their own risk
- Grain & Silver accepts no liability for personal injury unless caused by gross negligence
- Grain & Silver accepts no liability for loss or damage to personal property
- Participants are responsible for their own behaviour and safety during sessions
- Sessions take place in public spaces — Grain & Silver has no control over third party activity in those spaces
13. Privacy
Personal information provided at booking (name, email, phone number) is used solely for the purpose of managing your booking and delivering your scans. It is not shared with third parties. Payment data is processed by Stripe — Grain & Silver does not store card details.
